A Household Sugar Cane Juicer Only a Sweet Dream?

So you've had your veggies-in-a-glass. How about putting a sugar cane juicer to work for dessert?

The modern sugar cane juicer has come a long way from the trapiche, the old traditional wooden roller press used by the indigenous people of countries such as Panama and Columbia. However, it still produces the same sweet, delightful juice.

Juicer

A traditional Cuban drink, called guarapo, is freely available in Miami, Florida. Many visitors are not aware that this is in fact sugar cane juice. To produce this treat, a guarapo press is used.

Sugar cane juice is an unrefined source of carbohydrates, which is actually good for you! The juice of sugar cane grown for this purpose, has an appealing color, is soft on the palate, is more stable than vegetable juice and is filled with nutrients. While growing, it is watered constantly to keep the sugar percentage as low as possible.

A sugar cane juicer produces juice that is just a bit sweeter than orange juice. It contains much less sugar than a can of soda! It is believed this juice has properties that help to prevent tooth decay.

There is also evidence that this juice may contain some wound healing and immune strengthening properties. In addition, the juice has a soothing effect on the digestive system, especially when combined with fresh ginger.

Commercial juicers are prohibitively expensive, and a household juicer isn't a common sight. Pressers are available in table top models in countries like Malaysia, India and Singapore, where this juice is seen as a delicacy.

Entrepreneurs elsewhere have taken up the challenge and now sell organic juice, flavored with lime, ginger or rasberry. These extras compliment the juice perfectly.

A vegetable juicer that has occasionally been used for this juice is the dependable Omega 8005. If you decide to try this, you must remove the outer rind or husk - quite a time-consuming job! The outer husk is also the main source of impurities. Removing the juicing nozzle first is also recommended.

The VISOR Juicer by L'Equip, may also be able to handle it. Although juicing sugar cane sporadically should be fine, you have to decide for yourself if you want to risk possible damage to your juicer.

One of the other options currently on the market, is a sugar cane juicer called the MCI-170 that comes with the usual commercial-juicer price-tag. This is an extractor with a stainless steel cabinet, body and juice drum. The unit also has a drink tap. The juicer can go through around 170 canes per hour. The motor of the electric model is 1.5 HP. A gas version is also available.

The dimensions of the MCI-170 are 16" x 18" x 22". This is quite a hefty machine by juicing standards, as it weighs in at around 190 pounds.

A slightly more manageable version is the MCI-60, which dispatches with 60 canes per hour. It comes with the same stainless steel construction, standard drive container and filter with drink tap. The motor is less powerful at 3/4 HP.

This one is a slightly more svelte model with dimensions of 16" x 15" x 22". Unfortunately it is still a heavy contraption with a weight of 100 pounds.

The Abamaster Sugar Cane Juicer SCJE, actually more of a sugar cane crusher, has a powerful 1/2 HP motor. This durable machine is easy to use, has a stainless steel body and drums, and a reduced gear design for maximum torque.

The Sugar Cane Juice Extractor 2000 distributed by Zama Enterprises, is a countertop model with a stainless steel body and drums. It is easy to operate and has a removable front cover for quick cleaning. Weighing in at 100 pounds, you probably won't choose this one for your kitchen!

Until a more practical household juicer becomes available, it is perhaps wiser to stick to juicing ordinary fruit and vegetables.

Why You Need A Special Wheatgrass Juicer To Extract Juice From Wheat Grass

Wheat grass is now being called the "new age espresso". Packed with lots of nutrients you can get your daily wheat grass in many ways like powders and tablets, juices, and even smoothies. Besides being full of micronutrients you can also get lysine, vitamin C, calcium, chlorophyll, and protein from wheat grass. For those suffering with chronic fatigue syndrome wheat grass has been shown to help relive the symptoms. Adding wheat grass to your overall diet has been shown in studies to add many health benefits.

There are many benefits from adding wheat grass into your diet. It will help nourish the kidneys and liver, which will restore their vitality. You will restore balance to your body by removing toxic metal from your cells, building blood and cleaning your lymph system.

Juicer

Drinking a single ounce of wheat grass juice has the nutritional equivalent of eating 2.2 pounds of fresh vegetables. Wheat grass is a living food. You get 70% crude chlorophyll and receive a complete protein with approximately 30 enzymes. The above-mentioned facts are where all the benefits of wheat grass stems from. As you have seen from the facts mentioned above the benefits of wheat grass juice are quite numerous and you can purchase your own wheat grass juicer to make juice at home.

And what is a wheat grass juicer?

You use a wheat grass juicer to slowly extract the juice from each blade of wheat grass. A wheat grass juicers acts almost like a press and in comparison to other juicer it extracts the juices at a very slow rate of speed. If you tried to extract juice at a high speed you would actually destroy or damage the nutritional enzymes.

The RPM on a wheat grass juice ranges from 80 to 120, most conventional juicers have a range of 1000 or more RPMs. If you tried to use a high-speed juicer you would destroy the enzymes because their centrifugal forces oxidizes them. Because there is a lot of fiber in wheat grass the high-speed juicer has a good chance of getting clogged up. When it comes to extracting wheat grass juice the best candidate for the job is a juicer specifically designed for the task.

You can chose from a variety of different types of wheat grass juicers. They can range from a heavy-duty commercial juicer, a multi-purpose electrical juicer, or a manual type of juicer. So, go a head and get your own wheat grass juicer and enjoy making a healthy juice in the convenience of your own home.

Summary: In today's' market there are numerous wheat grass juicer available to you. If you add wheat grass juice to your diet you will be adding a natural, nutrient rich drink and gaining many health benefits.

Jack Lalanne Power Juicer Recipes

Here are some great juicer recipes that you can make with a Jack Lalanne power juicer machine. Included are the wonderful health benefits these juicer recipes can supply.

Power Juicer Recipe #1 - Bountiful Berries

Juicer

- 2 cups of blackberries
- 1 cup of blueberries
- 1 cup of raspberries

Wash berries, juice, enjoy! Berries are very easy to juice. They require very little prep time because they need no chopping or topping, just wash and juice.

Berries are a great source of an antioxidant called anthocyanins that are great for heart health. These anthocyanins are also found in the skins of red grapes and are a key ingredient in the famous heart healthy properties of red wine. Anthocyanins help our hearts by their effect upon our major arteries. Anthocyanins, along with vitamin C, help to build strong and flexible artery walls. This helps to protect us from developing arteriosclerosis, a condition that is the number one cause of heart disease.

Berries, especially raspberries and strawberries, are a great source of an antioxidant called ellagic acid. This antioxidant is one of the most potent of anti-cancer substances. A study that analysed the diets of 1300 elderly people in Massachusetts found that strawberries offered powerful protection against cancer development. Researchers found that those elderly people who ate the most strawberries were 2/3 less likely to die of cancer than those who eat the least!

Power Juicer Recipe #2 - Lean Greens

- 4 carrots
- 2 stalks of celery
- handful of spinach
- handful of kale

Wash vegetables through and top the carrots before juicing. Try to use organic if you can this will eliminate pesticides from the juice. Pesticides contain toxic heavy metals like lead and arsenic and other chemicals that can be carcinogenic. If you use non-organic carrots then it is better to peel them because most of the pesticides retain in the skin.

Spinach and kale are great for eye health. These two leafy green vegetables are a great source of two antioxidants called lutein and zeaxanthin that concentrate in the lens of our eyes. They protect the eyes from harmful oxygen molecules (free radicals) that are delivered via UV light. This helps to protect the eyes from premature aging and diseases like cataracts, glaucoma and age related macular degeneration.

Spinach and kale are also a great source of vitamin C, better than oranges even. Vitamin C is a key nutrient for the proper functioning of the immune system, creates collagen to keep our skin healthy and reduces inflammation and pain in arthritis sufferers.

Juicer Recipes For a 2010 Weight Loss Plan

If you are starting a diet plan please do yourself a favor and don't starve yourself. If you deny your body the fuel it needs to function, it goes into a "safe mode" and pretty much shuts down by slowing down your metabolism so dramatically that weight loss is virtually impossible. Plus, you are probably irritable and not too pleasant to be around either!

The real "trick" to dieting isn't starving. Nor is it spending a lot of your hard earned money on gimmick diet plans or pills. The "trick" is to consume fewer calories than your body burns on a daily basis while still providing the vitamins and nutrients required to maintain good health. Personally, I have found that a great way to do this is by pre-planning meals so I don't end up at the local drive through and by adding Smoothies to my diet.

Juicer

Smoothies are unique because they can be made with so many different ingredients including low calorie yogurts, milk, and soy. There are literally hundreds of fruit smoothie recipes so you won't bet board eating the same thing day after day after day. You can make weight loss smoothies to the consistency you desire so they will give you that "full" feeling which will result in eating less. Also, because of the ingredients used, having a healthy smoothie each day will insure your body gets the vital vitamins and nutrients it needs. Here's a tip: the bolder the color of the fruit, the more vitamins, minerals, and nutrients you are getting.

Fruit smoothie recipes are, most often, made of low fat, skim or soy milk but you can also make fresh fruit juice recipes as well. Most smoothie mixes avoid sugars so right from the start you are avoiding unnecessary calories. One of the best things about fruit smoothie recipes is that the fruit used is naturally sweet and, if you also use a low fat flavored yogurt in the mix, your sweet tooth is satisfied without harm to your diet!

Breville Juicer Reviews - Which Model is Best For You?

Looking at individual Breville juicer reviews will give you a lot of information about each individual juicer that they manufacture. But what if you don't know which one is best for you? After all, the prices range from to 9. There's obviously a difference between them! That's where a comparison review steps in. In this article we'll cover all seven of the Breville juicers and talk about what features they have in common and where they differ.

The Seven Breville Juicer Models are:

Juicer

  • Juice Fountain Compact BJE200XL at an msrp of .00
  • Juice Fountain Plus JE98XL at an msrp of 9.00
  • Ikon Multi-speed Juice Fountain BJE510XL at an msrp of 9.00
  • Die-cast Juice Fountain Elite 800JEXL at an msrp of 9.00
  • Dual Disc Juice Processor BJE820XL at an msrp of 9.00
  • The Juice and Blend BJB840XL at an msrp of 9.00
  • Die Cast Citrus Press 800CPXL at an msrp of 9.00

All of these seven models are manufactured by the same company, Breville, an Australian manufacturer that has been in business since 1932. They are all quite similar except for the last one in the list, the die cast citrus press. We'll cover that one real quick, since it is so different than the others.

The citrus press juicer is a hand powered press style juicer that juices only citrus; grapefruits, oranges, lemons, etc. It is made of die cast metal to hold up against the acidity of many citrus fruits. It also features a power assisted press, which makes it easier to extract the citrus juice, less muscle needed! The big detraction on numerous consumer juicer reviews is that there is a plastic part under the press that wears out under heavy use.

All right, now let's cover the other six juicer reviews in this line. The first four in the list, the compact, the plus, the ikon and the elite are all home grade juicers. They are the models that most people will choose to purchase for home juicing.

They are all centrifugal style juicers (vs. masticating, twin gear, single gear, and auger styles). What this means in plain english is that they will juice fast (much faster than the other styles of juicers) but will also heat the juice more than those other types typically do. This is a concern only if you are very particular about your juice heat and enzyme retention. The more fresh juice is heated, the more it loses valuable health promoting enzymes. If this is a concern for you, consider another style of juicer from another manufacturer altogether.

The compact has a 750 watt motor, the plus an 850 watt motor, the ikon a 900 watt motor and the elite has a 1,000 watt motor. For industry standards with centrifugal style juicers, these are good. With centrifugal types, the higher the motor wattage the better.

The first two in the line, the compact and the plus, have a plastic housing in a silver satin finish that mimics stainless steel. The ikon makes the upgrade to stainless steel and the elite to die cast metal. All of the Breville juicers reviewed have a very attractive appearance, however that silver finish on the bottom two models will wear with age.

Other differences are the speed controls. The compact is a one speed juicer. The plus steps it up to 2 speeds, the ikon has a whopping 5 speeds, the elite has 2 speeds.

So between these four, which is the best juicer reviewed? The compact is a great buy for the casual juicer at a low . The plus at 9 is a pass due to consumer reports of motor burn-outs. The upgrade to the 9 ikon makes more sense. The elite at 9 and titanium cutting blades is heading into heavy duty juicer territory. It is for users who plan on doing extensive juicing. For most families the compact or the ikon will be perfect.

Now what about those other two juicers? The dual disc juice processor and the juice & blend are both juicer/blender combos. At 9 the dual disc features a durable die cast body, a 1200 watt motor, 5 speed juicing and titanium cutting discs. Just unveiled August 2010 is the 9 juice & blend. It differs from the dual disc in that there are two separate top mounts that can be attached to the motor base. One is a juicer and one is a blender. They are basically two separate machines that share a motor base. The juice and blend also features 5 speed settings and titanium cutting discs. These two are for serious juicing and smoothie making fans, or cooks who want the creme de la creme of appliances in their kitchen!

What is the Best Juicer to Buy?

People are always trying to figure out what the best juicer is. In my eyes, there is no one perfect juicer out there. However, there is such a thing as the best juicer for you! The way I see it, the best juicer for you is the juicer that is going to make you want to juice every day. And of course, that's going to vary from person to person. But not to worry, I've outlined a few different aspects you should look for to when trying to find that perfect juicer for you!

Centrifugal Juicers

Juicer

If you are just getting into juicing and you don't want to dedicate very much time to it, you should probably look at a centrifugal juicer. They juice at very high speeds and their parts can be easily thrown into the dishwasher.  Quick juice, quick clean up. These are great machines, but they do have some downfalls. They work very well with hard fruits and veggies but they don't work very well with leafy greens or wheatgrass. Additionally, the high speeds that they operate at can help encourage the loss of valuable enzymes and nutrients. However, these juicers still produce healthier juice than you can buy in a grocery store. Therefore, if you aren't interested in leafy greens and you don't need to have the healthiest juice possible, get a centrifugal juicer. You'll love it!

Mastication Juicers

If you are a bit more serious about the nutritional value of your juice, or you want to be able to juice leafy greens, you should be looking at a mastication juicer. They're not all meant for wheatgrass so if you'd like to juice wheatgrass often, make sure you get a wheatgrass juicer. They come in every variety of mastication juicer. Mastication juicers require a bit more time than centrifugal juicers but they produce healthier juice and can be used as a food processor. They come in a few different variations:

Single Gear

Mastication juicers can either have one gear that chews at fruit or two. Single gear juicers tend to have a lower RPM, but the juicing process itself is faster. This is because there is only one gear to slow the produce from passing through the chamber so it gets sent through the machine more quickly. Downfall: a slightly lower extraction rate. However, the number of gears does not change the juice quality. Therefore, if you are looking for a healthy juicer but you'd like a relatively quick juicing process, this is a great type of juicer for you!

Twin Gear

Twin gear simply means there will be two augers chewing at your produce to extract juice. These juicers produce a very high yield of juice from whatever is sent through them. The tradeoff is that the higher yield usually means a slightly slower process. However, if you are passionate about juicing and you don't mind spending that little bit of extra time juicing, this is the perfect option for you!

Cold-Press

Cold-Press Masticating juicers have motors that run at a speed between 80 RPMs and 200 RPMs. This range of speed ensures that nutritional enzymes aren't lost to unnecessary oxidation, which is encouraged when juice heats up. In other words, it means the motor is spinning slow enough to make sure the juice doesn't get heated because when juice gets heated, enzymes escape. A definite must for all health nuts! Only downside: longer juicing process because of slow speeds.

Price Range

Juicers come in all different shapes and sizes so you can probably find one to suit your price range. As a general rule of thumb though, the more expensive the juicer, the longer it will last and the more it can handle (and very often, the longer the warranty). If you would actually like to begin juicing, consider it an investment. If you buy yourself a cheap juicer that clogs all the time and falls apart, you'll feel as though you've wasted your money and you will find yourself feeling bitter towards juicing. However, if you really want to juice and you do your research and find yourself that perfect juicer to suit your juicing needs, you'll be so happy you spent the extra time and money that you'll never stop juicing!

Benefits of Juicer Drinks and Smoothie Drinks

The benefits of juicer recipes and smoothie recipes are numerous. One main reason why juicing and drinking smoothies is so important is because both are filled with liquids like water. Our bodies need water to survive and thrive and so few people actually get enough water every day. Rarely will someone sit down and eat several carrots, celery, apples, oranges, and yogurt. If we combine all of them in a delicious smoothie, the body gets the liquids, the vitamins, and the minerals that the body needs.

Veggies and fruits contain essential nutrients that the body needs like vitamin C and A and beta carotene. Fruits are the number one source for minerals like magnesium, iron, iodine, sodium, copper, and potassium. These nutrients are essential for the body to function the way it needs to. When a fruit is consumed in the traditional way of eating it, the food has to go thru the traditional digestion cycle. When the fruit is juiced, the body is able to absorb and use the juice so much more quickly. The act of juicing separates the juice from the fiber and pulp of the fruit. The fiber and pulp are good for the body, but the juice is best. The body can only get a small amount of the nutrients unless it is removed from the fiber and pulp.

Smoothie Recipe

There is something in the smoothie world known as green smoothies. Traditionally smoothies were made with fruit and yogurt and usually had a sweet taste to them. As the world started getting more in touch with their healthy side, more people started experimenting with smoothies. Green smoothies have different ingredients in them that give them the not so pretty color. One way smoothies benefit and help to improve health is by helping us lose weight. A smoothie usually has less calorie then traditional food and has a lot less fat. Because smoothies are made from natural ingredients, the preservatives are way down also. Instead of reaching for a hamburger at a drive through, someone can whip up a smoothie with very little time and effort involved.

If you are like me, you crave sugar all the time. It is a daily battle with myself to not go to the vending machine and get a snickers. I don't even realize all of the sugar I am putting in my body. It starts with my coffee and even at lunch I get sugar in my salad dressing. The green smoothies help reduce the cravings the body has for the sugar and fat.
